Five Signs You’re Ready to Start Strength Training (Even If You Think You’re Not)

DSC08221

Most people who are ready to start never actually feel ready. That is one of the biggest misconceptions I see, week after week, working with people in this industry for twenty years. Readiness is not a feeling that shows up one morning and convinces you. It is not confidence, and it is not motivation. It is something you can actually recognize in your own life if you know what to look for. Here are five signs that tell me someone is ready, whether they believe it yet or not.

Sign 1: You’ve Tried Other Things and They Haven’t Stuck

Cardio classes. Apps. Walking programs. Maybe a dozen different attempts over the years that all started strong and eventually faded out. If that is your story, I want to reframe something for you. That is not failure. That is not proof that fitness isn’t for you. That simply means you have not found the right thing yet.

Ask yourself this. Have I actually failed at fitness, or have I just not found the approach that fits how my body and my life actually work?

Sign 2: Something in Your Daily Life Is Harder Than It Should Be

Getting up off the floor takes more effort than it used to. Carrying groceries in from the car leaves you a little more winded than you would like to admit. Keeping up with your kids or your grandkids feels harder than it should at your age. These are not small things. Your body is talking to you, and it is worth listening.

Ask yourself this. What is one thing in my daily life that used to be easy and now takes more effort than it should?

Sign 3: You’ve Been Thinking About This for Longer Than Six Months

If this has been sitting in the back of your mind for months, that is not indecision. I want to be clear about that. That is your instinct telling you something is missing, and it keeps circling back because part of you already knows the answer. People do not keep thinking about things that do not matter to them.

Ask yourself this. If I am still thinking about this six months later, what is that telling me?

Sign 4: You’re Tired of Starting Over

The cycle of starting, stopping, and starting again is exhausting, both physically and mentally. I have talked to hundreds of people who describe this exact pattern, and almost every single one of them who finally broke that cycle says the same thing. What made it stick was having a coach in their corner and a community around them, not another app or another program they had to figure out alone.

Ask yourself this. What would be different this time if I had real support instead of trying to do this by myself again?

Sign 5: You Want to Feel Like Yourself Again, or for the First Time

This one is not about a number on a scale or a certain look in the mirror. This is about energy. Confidence. Being able to move through your day and your life without pain holding you back. That feeling, of actually feeling like yourself, is usually the real reason underneath all the other reasons.

Ask yourself this. If I stripped away the scale and the mirror completely, what would it actually feel like to feel like myself again?

You Don’t Need to Get Ready. You Need to Walk In.

If more than one of these hit home, here is what I want you to know. You do not need to wait until you feel ready, because that feeling was never going to show up on its own. Readiness is not something you find before you start. It is something you build by starting.
