How to read and understand food labels

Decoding the Food Label Jungle

If you’ve ever tried to make heads or tails of food labels, you know what it’s like to venture through a jungle. But fear not my adventurer friends! Grab your Magnifying glasses and let’s learn the secrets to navigating this wild world together.

Step One: Serving Size

The first thing to focus on is the serving size. It’s generally mentioned at the top of the label. Why does it matter? Because all the other information on the label depends on it! For instance, a bag of chips might contain 3 servings, but if you devour the whole bag thinking it’s one serving, you’re actually tripling your calorie intake. So always be sure to double-check the serving size.

Step Two: Calories

Next up is the calorie count. This number tells you how much energy you get from one serving of that food. Not all calories are made equal though, which brings us to the next step.

Step Three: Nutrients

Now comes the trickier bit – deciphering the list of nutrients. Here’s some of the key ones to watch out for:

  • Protein: Essential for muscle growth and repair.
  • Fiber: Keeps your digestion working well.
  • Carbs: Your body’s favorite source of energy. (So embrace those carbs!)
  • Sugars: “Added sugars” are the ones to avoid, as they don’t provide any nutritional value.
  • Fats: Don’t be afraid of fats! Some are really good for your heart health. Just mind the “saturated” and “trans” fats.

Step Four: Daily Value

Still with me? Great! We’re almost there. The next factor to consider is the “% Daily Value” (DV). This tells you what percentage of the recommended daily amount of each nutrient is in a single serving, based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

Step Five: Ingredients Listing

Finally, don’t miss the ingredients list, typically at the bottom of the label. They’re listed in descending order by weight. If sugar (or some sneaky synonym for sugar) is listed as one of the first few ingredients, that’s a red flag.
