The Power of Macronutrients: Carbs, Protein, and Fats
The world of nutrition can turn any degree holder into a confused pupil. Don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things. To start, let’s talk about the big bosses of nutrition: macronutrients. Macro-what? Simply put, macronutrients are the nutrients that your body needs in large amounts. They’re broken down into three groups: carbohydrates (carbs), proteins, and fats.
Carbohydrates
Let’s start with carbohydrates, or as they are popularly known, carbs. These are your body’s primary source of energy—and no, they’re not evil as some fad diets might make them out to be. Foods packed with carbs include grains, fruit, and sugary snacks. A better approach is to choose complex carbs like whole grains and vegetables, which give you a steady release of energy.
Protein
Next up is protein, the building blocks for your muscles. They’re used to repair and build tissues, make hormones, and other fun stuff. Chicken, eggs, tofu, and beans are examples of high-protein foods. Don’t skip your protein!
Fats
Last, but definitely not least, are fats. Yes, you read that right. Your body needs fats too! Fats are crucial for brain function, and help your body to absorb vitamins. Everyone’s favorite avocado is a great source of healthy fat, as are nuts, seeds, and fatty fish like salmon.
Fuel Your Body Right
Imagine your body as a high-performing vehicle. It can’t run without fuel. And just like how the quality of fuel matters for your car’s performance, the type of macronutrients you’re consuming matters for your body. Remember, a balanced diet includes a mix of carbs, protein and fats.
