The Role of Macronutrients
We’ve all heard the terms carbs, protein, and fats before. But do you know what they actually do for your body? They’re called “macronutrients” because your body needs large amounts of them to function properly. So, let’s take a deeper look at these important nutrients:
Carbs – Your body’s main fuel
Carbs, or carbohydrates, are your body’s favorite source of energy. They are quickly broken down into sugars that your body uses to power through tough workouts, hectic days, and even simple tasks like thinking and breathing. Complex carbs, like whole grains and vegetables, are your best bet for long-lasting energy.
Protein – The building blocks of life
Protein is vital for building and repairing muscle tissue, especially after a tough workout. But it doesn’t stop at muscles. Protein also supports immune function, promotes healthy hair and skin, and even helps create hormones and enzymes that your body needs in order to function.
Fats – The backup energy store
Fats often get a bad rap, but they’re actually essential to your health. Fats help to protect vital organs, support cell growth, supply essential fatty acids that your body can’t produce on its own, and provide backup energy when carb supplies run low.
Even though fats are more calorie-dense than carbs or protein, it doesn’t mean they should be avoided. Healthy fats, like avocados, nuts, and fish, can help to keep you feeling full and satisfy your taste buds, too.
Putting It All Together
Understanding what carbs, protein, and fats do for your body is the first step towards better nutrition. Are you getting the right balance of macronutrients? Now that you’re a little bit more clued up, you can start tinkering with your food choices to see what works best for you.
