The Science of Breathwork
When we are stressed, our bodies respond in a specific way. You’ve probably heard of the ‘fight or flight’ response. This involves shallow, rapid breathing and can contribute to feelings of anxiety and discomfort. Breathwork aims to activate the opposite response, aptly named ‘rest and digest’. By taking slow, deep breaths, we can persuade our bodies to relax and dispel the stress clouding our minds.
How to Practice Breathwork
Breathwork can be practiced anywhere and at anytime. All you need is a couple of minutes and a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Begin by closing your eyes and taking a deep breath in through your nose, hold for a count of five, then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this cycle for a few minutes and observe how your body responds.
Take it One Breath at a Time
Don’t worry if you don’t see instant results. Like any practice, it takes time. The key is consistency, so try to incorporate breathwork into your daily routine. It could be first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or just before bed. And remember, this is your practice, so adjust as needed based on what feels best for you.
