How to read and understand food labels

Decoding the Food Label Labyrinth

Welcome friends! At XM Xtra Mile Fitness, we understand that fitness isn’t just about the workout. It’s also about feeding your body the right kind of fuel. One way to do that is by understanding what’s in the food you’re eating. But if you’re like most folks, reading food labels can sometimes feel like deciphering a complex riddle. Don’t worry! We’re here to help with some simple tips.

Understanding The Basics

First things first, the serving size. This is usually at the top of the label. All the information on the label is based on this. So, if you eat more (or less) than this amount, you’ll need to adjust the values accordingly.

Next up, calories. This tells you how much energy you get from one serving of this food. Remember, not all calories are created equal – it’s also about the quality of those calories. This leads us to the next section of our label.

The Nutrient Information

Next, we come down to the part that lists nutrients. These are broken into two sections: nutrients to limit and nutrients to get enough of. The first group includes things like fats, sugars, and sodium and the second includes fiber, vitamins, calcium, and iron. As a general rule, aim for low values in the first group and high in the second.

The Fine Print

Last but not the least, the footnotes. This part may seem a bit boring, but it’s important. It tells you the recommended daily amounts for a 2,000 and 2,500 calorie diet. These numbers can help guide your food choices for the day.

Practice Makes Perfect

Like anything, becoming a whiz at reading food labels takes time and practice. So, next time you’re at the grocery store, take a second to read the labels and familiarize yourself with the items you put into your cart. Your body will thank you for it!
